5 Power Networking Tips
By Gian Fiero
Everybody knows the importance of networking, but not everyone knows how to do it. Below are some powerful networking tips that will help you network effectively.
1.) Know What You Want
Knowing what you want is the first step to getting it. When you are networking, keep this in the forefront of your mind, and be able to articulate this to others. For example, don’t just want a “deal,” be specific. There are many types of deals to be made in the music industry – know what they are and how they differ.
2.) Know Who You Are Talking To
Rookie networking is marked by ignorance. In the day and age of the Internet, ignorance is voluntary – not mandatory. You can Google panelists as they are speaking. You can Google people you want to meet at a conference before you approach them. You get the point. Furthermore, the more you know about someone, the better you can determine how much of an ally they can be in helping you get what you want.
3.) Know What The Hell You Are Talking About
The only thing worse in any networking situation than talking to someone who talks way too much, is talking to someone who doesn’t know that the hell they are talking about. You lose credibility and respect in one breath. Stick to your expertise or beliefs (which is where people really bond). The most important thing for a person to know after they have talked to you, is who you are, what you do, and why they should care. If they can’t answer that, what was the point?
4.) Know What You Have To Offer
Remember this: The key to getting what you want, is helping people get what they want. Too often people make networking about them. Me, me, me! Shut-up already – and listen. When this happens, you can now discover what other people’s networking objectives are, and how you can help. This mutual exchange is what networking is about. It’s also what enables networks to thrive.
5.) Become An Ally, Get An Ally
It’s not a surprise that people are self-serving, especially in networking situations. What is surprising is when you meet someone who is not that way. That’s the person who differentiates himself/herself. Offer something of use or value to others and you will instantly endear yourself.
We are all looking for value; someone or something that’s important to our success. Find out what that something is when you network with others. Don’t assume that they will figure it out – make it clear to them. Your success in the music industry, or any industry for that matter, is all about being connected to people who care, and people who matter. These tips can help you do just that.

Gian it’s good to see you still doing positive to help people who want to help themselves. I’ve come back after being gone for awhile and look very much forwar to attending the conference. Whe I first met you I was into artist development, I’m still into that as well as other things with a promotions company. I look forward to talking to you at the conference.
