Some say, Scott Roberts acquired the name One Drop because of his ability to play any instrument at any time and impress his audience with no mistakes. But the truth is he was donned One Drop while working with Jeff Narell in a steel drum band as a reaggae drummer. The term One Drop is a Reaggae Drum Riddim that was played extremely well by Scott, earning him the name.
One Drop, son of theatrical genius and cinematic entertainer, Thalmus Rasulala, was born with the gift of pure talent and has spent a lifetime working in the field of music. One Drop began his musical career playing the steel drums and received formal training from the legendary, Charles Moffitt in drums, percussions and trumpet. In his youth, he’d played along side Kadarell and Charnett (Charles’ sons) in their school Jazz band in Berkeley, California. When only 13 years old, Drop played steel drums in a band with his brother Mark, Jeff Narell, Johnny Otis, Jr.(son of the legendary Johnny Otis), Lenny Pickett of Tower of Power, Dave Margin of The Santana Band and Dan Reagan who went on to become a member of the Mark Anthony Band.
On the night that Drop signed his first recording contract with Warner Bros., he also signed a deal to co-produce and perform on a Hip Hop album for Profile Records, becoming the first Rap producer from the Bay Area to make it to the majors.
One Drop had the honor of working with such musicians as Bill Summers, the band Confunktion, Sheila E, Wayne Shorter and Ryuichi Sakamoto and rap artists such as Scarface, Too Short, E-40, Mac Dre, FAMOUZ and C-Bo.
His ability to make beats and music that stands the test of time is for what Drop is famous. His wide range of sounds makes him unique as a beat maker and producer. From Jazz, Reaggae, Latino influenced sounds, rap and R&B, One Drop has kept his sound fresh and progressive. Pioneer of the Bay Area distinctive sound, One Drop isn’t selfish with his skills.
